Located at the crossroads of four European countries and traversed by four of Europe’s nine major transport corridors, the Grand Est region stands out for its unparalleled strategic position at the heart of Europe’s most densely populated and economically dynamic areas.
While its industrial heritage remains a defining part of the region’s identity and legacy, Grand Est has undergone significant transformation since the late twentieth century. In particular, it has strengthened its education, research, and innovation capabilities in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), centered around its three main cities: Nancy, Metz, and Strasbourg.
AI Grand Est ENACT seeks to harness the full potential of artificial intelligence to support digital and environmental transitions, advancing a sovereign, ethical, and sustainable European vision of AI.

Complementary Areas of Expertise
The success of AI Grand Est ENACT is built on the excellence and complementarity of the region’s expertise. Together, the research institutions across Grand Est form a unique ecosystem that combines internationally recognized strengths in artificial intelligence, engineering, health, and the natural and social sciences.
Research laboratories in Lorraine contribute leading expertise in:
- Natural Language Processing (NLP)
- Speech technologies
- Human–robot interaction
- Symbolic AI
- Industry 4.0 and the factory of the future
- Materials science
- Imaging
- Clinical research on cardiovascular diseases and inflammatory bowel diseases
Research laboratories in Strasbourg contribute leading expertise in:
- AI and translational research for image-guided surgery
- Chemistry
- Fundamental biological research
In addition, all sites are actively engaged at the intersection of mathematics and AI, as well as artificial intelligence and the social sciences and humanities. This interdisciplinary approach is supported by three joint Université de Lorraine–University of Strasbourg laboratories (AHP, BETA, and LISEC), along with three additional complementary laboratories.
Both Nancy and Strasbourg host major national research organizations, including Inria1, CNRS2, and Inserm3, further strengthening the scientific foundations of AI Grand Est ENACT.
- Inria, the French National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology
- CNRS, the French National Centre for Scientific Research
- INSERM, the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research
